79D illustrator for charles dickens PHIZ (hablot knight browne was the english illustrator of 10 books over 23 years for charles dickens. he took on the nickname "phiz" to complement dickens' "boz". eventually, browne's comic/satiric style of illustration did not fit well with dickens' later, more serious novels, and after the somewhat disappointing illustrations for "a tale of two cities," he would never work for dickens again. he went on to illustrate the best-known novels of charles lever and harrison ainsworth in their original editions, and his work was in constant demand by publishers until a stroke paralyzed him in 1867, permanently diminishing his considerable artistic powers.
