Put up job??? WTF?
kalisa,
i'm not sure how colloquial or archaic it is but ya sure don't hear it very often anymore...
here's my take on it...
as an idiom, a put-up job describes an incredulous attempt to trick or deceive someone. example: at the time, that guy seemed credible enough, but, after i'd given him the money t' fix the bad spot on my roof... and he didn't show up... i kinda realized it was nothin' but a put-up job. [as in... i can't believe it! folks 'round here'd never do somethin' like that... 'somebody must have put him up to something like that'])

Don't feel bad, that was the one answer that tripped me up too; I'd never heard it before, and the J in there really threw me for a loop, which took a little while to untangle.
You weren't the only one(s); live & learn, I suppose.
